As we approach the end of the school year, here are a couple of things to keep in mind.

End-of-the-Year Reporting
Remember to log your A Greater Cause Hours, A Greater Cause Dollars, and Military Heroes Campaign Donations before the May 1 deadline.

Ritual Proficiencies must be tested, and added to KappaSig.net before May 1 as well to qualify for Founders’ Award for Chapter Excellence Points.

Finally, remember to send initiation cards to HQ within ten days of the initiation. Initiation Certificates and Badges will not printed until the card is reviewed.

Chapter Archive
The Kappa Sigma Headquarters houses a Chapter Archive for your Chapter. As we conclude the academic year, this is a great time to add to your archive, and grow the story of your Chapter. Please submit Newsletters, the State of the Chapters, or any appropriate photos from the past year.

You could have submitted materials by the Annual Report, or you can email Michael Malenic at michael.malenic@hq.kappasigma.org.

Caduceus Submissions
Twice a year, Kappa Sigma publishes The Caduceus and sends it to every Alumni member free of charge. Over the past year, we have conducted a readership survey, and the most popular section was Chapter Updates from our undergraduates. Chapter Updates should include your Chapter name, University, and between 100 – 150 words about your Chapter operations and members over the last six months. This will be published in July, so keep in mind the current semester will be concluded when these will appear to your Alumni.

To ensure your update gets published and to qualify for the F.A.C.E. points, submissions are due by May 1. Please submit them using this page on the website.

Grand Conclave Registration
Join us this summer for Grand Conclave in Las Vegas where we’ll discuss how to shatter the expectations of fraternity men and break boundaries with programs designed to strengthen your Chapter. Your Chapter has received two delegate spots to ensure your Chapter can attend.  Make sure that your Chapter’s delegates are registered and attend the conference to avoid fines.

Tyler Johnson, a 2020 initiate of the the Lambda Chapter at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, recently received a national award for his leadership in the Tennessee Greek system. From January to November 2023, Brother Johnson presided over 2800+ members from multiple fraternities while working to grow and strengthen interfraternalism throughout campus. Working alongside the rest of the executive board and with the support of chapter presidents, Brother Johnson helped Tennessee win three other accolades, including Outstanding Commitment to Diversity, and Outstanding Peer Governance. Furthermore, Brother Johnson and his team spearheaded MANUAL, a guide to men’s health accessible to all, not just those in Greek life.

When asked about the award and his leadership journey, Brother Johnson offered humble words on the importance of community at the Lambda Chapter and its relation to his personal growth. “My time spent at the Lambda Chapter… provided me with Brotherhood, leadership opportunities, and the desire to achieve worthy things. I’ve been blessed to have experienced great leadership from Brothers before me and have learned from those younger than me. The Chapter has pushed me to seek leadership opportunities so that I may positively represent our Brotherhood and better myself.”

Congratulations Brother Johnson on your success!

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity has announced that Brother James V. Canepa has been awarded the US Senator John G. Tower Distinguished Alumni Award, considered one of the highest honors Alumni can receive within the International Fraternity.

Established in 1995, this award honors “Kappa Sigma Brothers who have shown a commitment to their business, family, church, philanthropy, and community activities.”  It is named for the late Brother John G. Tower, U. S. Senator from Texas, who served on the Kappa Sigma Supreme Executive Committee for six years and was Worthy Grand Master from 1971-73.

Brother Canepa is a 1983 Initiate of the Epsilon-Eta Chapter at Bowling Green State University. He has served the public in multiple capacities over the past 20 years, but today Brother Canepa serves as the superintendent of the Ohio Division of Liquor Control.

He joined Liquor Control in 2017 as a project leader of the Liquor Modernization Project, the state’s effort to modernize systems and processes across the liquor enterprise.  He has been a leader in Ohio with Barrel Program Whiskey Lotteries, which releases six exclusive single-barrel selections in 30 stores across the state. This program helps educate the consumer on special batches being produced and promotes distilleries. It also assists with expanding the state’s spirits sales.

He has fostered many relationships with industry leaders because of these efforts, and with these profits, world-class corporations, entrepreneurs, and talented individuals build careers in Ohio. Brother Canepa is also a national leader in his field, serving on the Board of Directors of the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association.

James Canepa began his career in the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, serving as an Appellate Prosecutor and Senior Trial Prosecutor. Later, he served as Chief of Staff and Legal Affairs for Ohio’s Environmental Protection Agency, as Chief Legal Counsel for the Ohio Department of Safety, and most recently as Deputy Inspector General and First Assistant Attorney General.

James has received an Outstanding Advocacy Award from the National Association of Government Attorneys, the Caulley Award for Outstanding Victim Service, and a Resolution of Recognition from former Ohio Governor George V. Voinovich.

Brother Christopher P. Suttmeier (Tau-Chi, Fairleigh Dickinson University, ‘16) serves as our Volunteer Commissioner for the 2021 – 2023 biennium. In this role, he is charged with growing the largest alumni volunteer corps within the fraternal world. Brother Suttmeier joined us for a brief Q&A about his time in the Fraternity.

What is your professional title and employer outside of the Order?

“MFS Investment Management, Internal Sales Representative.”

What is your favorite Kappa Sigma event you attended?

“The first Champions Weekend that I attended in 2016 as an undergrad.”

Why do you volunteer for Kappa Sigma?

“Our undergraduates. They are the driving force for why I do what I do. The ability to impact the lives of young people and mentor them into Kappa Sigma & eventual professional success is what makes this enjoyable. The undergraduates are the lifeblood of our Fraternity—their success is our success.”

What’s the best advice for Kappa Sigma Chapters that you can give?

“Be diligent and thoughtful with everything you do. What you’ll remember about your college experience is the time you spend with your brothers and the impact you had on each other, the impact you had on the community, and the impact you had on your campus. Make those times worthwhile and take every opportunity that you can to enhance that experience by using the fraternity as your launching off point.”

Thank you, Brother Suttmeier! We appreciate your dedication to finding outstanding volunteers for all of our chapters and colonies across North America! AEKΔB!

It’s gameday again! This week, we’re highlighting another 4 Brothers who will be taking to the football field today to lead their teams to victory: Nathan A. Parodi (Xi, University of Arkansas, ‘20), Jake H. Yuracheck (Xi, University of Arkansas, ‘20), Nicholas B. Rice (Sigma-Theta, Old Dominion University, ‘18), and Codey Bennett (Upsilon-Alpha, Reinhardt University, ‘20).

In addition to Brother Bumper J. Pool (Xi, University of Arkansas, ‘19), who we highlighted in our last article, Brother Nathan Parodi plays for the Arkansas Razorbacks as a defensive back who has seen a lot of action on special teams over his eight games at Arkansas. Brother Parodi is second on the team for return yardage with an average of 37 yards per return.

Joining Brother Parodi on special teams is redshirt junior, Brother Jake Yurachek. Brother Yurachek is a linebacker on special teams and has played in over 90 special teams plays. He has been recognized by the Southeastern Conference as a member of the Fall 2020 SEC Academic Honor Roll. Brothers Pool, Parodi, and Yurachek are coming off an impressive win against the Texas A&M Aggies last week and seek to extend their undefeated season with a win against the #2 Georgia Bulldogs today.

Brother Nick Rice is the starting kicker for the  Old Dominion University Monarchs. Brother Rice leads the team with the most points 3 years in a row from 2017 to 2019. He’s played in almost every game since joining the team in 2017 with a career 48-yard field goal. Coming off a loss to Buffalo last week, Brother Rice and the Monarchs look to secure their 3rd win of the season as they take on the UTEP Miners today.

Brother Codey Bennett is a redshirt freshman for the Reinhardt University Eagles and plays an integral role on the team as the long-snapper. While last year’s season was cut short, all Brothers are excited to see what Brother Bennett and the Eagles will do for his next full season. The Eagles are coming off a heart-breaking 34-33 loss to Bethel University TN last week and are looking to improve their record to 3-2 against the Ave Maria Gyrenes today.

Good luck to each of these Brothers as they take the field this season and lead their teams to victory! If you know a Brother who is competing in NCAA athletics, let us know at pr@hq.kappasigma.org.

(LAWRENCE, Kan.)—The Kappa Sigma Fraternity has named United States Senator Robert J. Dole its 2020 Man of the Year, making him the first member of the Fraternity to receive the award twice. The announcement took place this past weekend as part of its 73rd Biennial Grand Conclave held in Nashville, Tenn. Brother Dole was initiated into the Gamma-Omicron Chapter of Kappa Sigma at the University of Kansas on October 4th, 1942.

Brother Dole was decorated as the Kappa Sigma Man of the Year in 1970 and was inducted to the Kappa Sigma Hall of Honor in 2009 as the 14th Brother in the history of Kappa Sigma to be decorated with this significant honor. Brother Dole was named the 2020 Kappa Sigma Man of the Year at the 73rd Biennial Grand Conclave in Nashville, Tennessee, becoming the first Brother ever to win the Man of the Year Award twice.

The 2020 award was accepted on Brother Dole’s behalf by fellow Kappa Sigma Man of the Year Martin C. Petersen, former Executive Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and treasurer of Kappa Sigma’s International Board of Directors, who received the award in 2006. The award was also presented to Dole’s home chapter, the Gamma-Omicron Chapter at the University of Kansas.

“Kappa Sigma has always represented responsibility, kindness and service to others – qualities that have shaped my life in nearly eight decades as a Brother,” Senator Dole said in his acceptance letter. “To have been selected as the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Man of the Year on two separate occasions is a significant honor that means a great deal to me.”

“Brother Dole represents one of the greatest statesmen and public servants that the United States and the State of Kansas have ever known,” said Adam J. Merillat, president of Kappa Sigma’s international board of directors. “Brother Dole has accomplished so much since he was first awarded the Kappa Sigma Man of the Year Award in 1970. Kappa Sigma is grateful for his service and privileged to again honor Brother Dole with this award.”

Brother Dole served in the United States Army during World War II and became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division. In April of 1945, Brother Dole was wounded in combat while engaged with the German Army in the hills of Northern Italy. Brother Dole was decorated three times for heroism, receiving two Purple Hearts for his injuries and the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for valor for his attempt to assist a downed radioman.

Brother Dole represented the State of Kansas in the United States Senate from 1969 to 1996. He was Republican Leader of the United States Senate during the final 11 years of his tenure including three years as Senate Majority Leader. Prior to his service in the Senate, Brother Dole served in the United States House of Representatives from 1961 to 1969. The Robert J. Dole Institute, housed on the University of Kansas Campus in Lawrence, was established to bring bipartisanship back to politics.

President Gerald Ford chose Brother Dole for his running mate as Vice-President in the 1976 election. Brother Dole was also the Republican Nominee for the 1996 presidential election. While on the campaign trail, Brother Dole stopped along the way too many Kappa Sigma Chapter Houses and Chapters to share fellowship and Brotherhood. He was the keynote speaker at the 56th Biennial Grand Conclave of Kappa Sigma in Indianapolis in 1987.

In 2010, Kappa Sigma and the Fisher House Foundation dedicated a Fisher House at the VA Hospital in Washington D.C. in honor of Brother Dole. Brother Dole’s wife, Senator Elizabeth Dole participated and spoke at the groundbreaking and cornerstone dedication ceremony. This was made possible through the hard work and efforts of Chapters of Kappa Sigma Fraternity through the Military Heroes Campaign. This achievement was a most historic moment in the history of the Order and recognized a great patriot and leader in the history of the United States.

This week, we continue our celebration of Kappa Sigma’s successes over this biennium with a look back at colony expansion.

Another of this biennium’s goals was to continue Kappa Sigma’s historic expansion with even more colonies to be established at colleges and universities across North America.

No one knew the challenges this biennium would bring when colleges and universities closed their campuses during the pandemic. Many of our competitors significantly scaled back recruitment operations due to COVID…

…but not Kappa Sigma!

Kappa Sigma forged ahead with our colony and expansion program and will end the biennium with 25 colonies started, an astounding and amazing number given the challenges of COVID and campus closures during this period.

Some of this biennium’s highlights in colony expansion include:

Epsilon Phi (Texas Tech University): Kappa Sigma welcomed back this historic chapter from our Epsilon series with August 2020 rechartering with 65 new founding fathers. A model of Champion Quest, the Chapter/Colony recruited 51 pledges this year.

Lambda-Zeta Colony (Virginia Commonwealth University): Kappa Sigma returned to the VCU campus in the Fall 2020 semester with an initial group of 52 men.

Upsilon-Upsilon (Illinois State University): Kappa Sigma’s success brought us to new schools this biennium with Upsilon-Upsilon leading the way, chartering in March 2021 with 104 founding fathers! Upsilon-Upsilon also had a great year in Champion Quest, recruiting 41 pledges this academic year.

University of Guelph Colony: Despite the numerous pandemic restrictions, our Colony at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, recruited 35 pledges this year and completed its colony roadmap requirements. Kappa Sigma hopes to welcome to see continued success with a potential Fall 2021 chartering possible.
