(LAWRENCE, Kan.)—The Kappa Sigma Fraternity has named United States Senator Robert J. Dole its 2020 Man of the Year, making him the first member of the Fraternity to receive the award twice. The announcement took place this past weekend as part of its 73rd Biennial Grand Conclave held in Nashville, Tenn. Brother Dole was initiated into the Gamma-Omicron Chapter of Kappa Sigma at the University of Kansas on October 4th, 1942.

Brother Dole was decorated as the Kappa Sigma Man of the Year in 1970 and was inducted to the Kappa Sigma Hall of Honor in 2009 as the 14th Brother in the history of Kappa Sigma to be decorated with this significant honor. Brother Dole was named the 2020 Kappa Sigma Man of the Year at the 73rd Biennial Grand Conclave in Nashville, Tennessee, becoming the first Brother ever to win the Man of the Year Award twice.

The 2020 award was accepted on Brother Dole’s behalf by fellow Kappa Sigma Man of the Year Martin C. Petersen, former Executive Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and treasurer of Kappa Sigma’s International Board of Directors, who received the award in 2006. The award was also presented to Dole’s home chapter, the Gamma-Omicron Chapter at the University of Kansas.

“Kappa Sigma has always represented responsibility, kindness and service to others – qualities that have shaped my life in nearly eight decades as a Brother,” Senator Dole said in his acceptance letter. “To have been selected as the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Man of the Year on two separate occasions is a significant honor that means a great deal to me.”

“Brother Dole represents one of the greatest statesmen and public servants that the United States and the State of Kansas have ever known,” said Adam J. Merillat, president of Kappa Sigma’s international board of directors. “Brother Dole has accomplished so much since he was first awarded the Kappa Sigma Man of the Year Award in 1970. Kappa Sigma is grateful for his service and privileged to again honor Brother Dole with this award.”

Brother Dole served in the United States Army during World War II and became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division. In April of 1945, Brother Dole was wounded in combat while engaged with the German Army in the hills of Northern Italy. Brother Dole was decorated three times for heroism, receiving two Purple Hearts for his injuries and the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for valor for his attempt to assist a downed radioman.

Brother Dole represented the State of Kansas in the United States Senate from 1969 to 1996. He was Republican Leader of the United States Senate during the final 11 years of his tenure including three years as Senate Majority Leader. Prior to his service in the Senate, Brother Dole served in the United States House of Representatives from 1961 to 1969. The Robert J. Dole Institute, housed on the University of Kansas Campus in Lawrence, was established to bring bipartisanship back to politics.

President Gerald Ford chose Brother Dole for his running mate as Vice-President in the 1976 election. Brother Dole was also the Republican Nominee for the 1996 presidential election. While on the campaign trail, Brother Dole stopped along the way too many Kappa Sigma Chapter Houses and Chapters to share fellowship and Brotherhood. He was the keynote speaker at the 56th Biennial Grand Conclave of Kappa Sigma in Indianapolis in 1987.

In 2010, Kappa Sigma and the Fisher House Foundation dedicated a Fisher House at the VA Hospital in Washington D.C. in honor of Brother Dole. Brother Dole’s wife, Senator Elizabeth Dole participated and spoke at the groundbreaking and cornerstone dedication ceremony. This was made possible through the hard work and efforts of Chapters of Kappa Sigma Fraternity through the Military Heroes Campaign. This achievement was a most historic moment in the history of the Order and recognized a great patriot and leader in the history of the United States.

One of the best parts of our Leadership Conferences and Grand Conclaves is our Awards Program! Kappa Sigma loves nothing more than to recognize the chapters and brothers who exemplify and exceed the high ideals of our order! Some awards require no application. Others require a simple letter of recommendation and, in some cases, some supporting documentation like pictures or videos. The deadline for these written applications is May 15th.

Click HERE to view the Awards Applications

Here are some best practices to make the most of Kappa Sigma Awards season:

  • Chapter Executive Committees should review the list this week and determine for which awards they qualify.
  • Chapters should apply for all awards for which they qualify!
  • Chapters should also consider recognizing and honoring their outstanding alumni volunteers with applications for alumni awards as well!
  • Grand Scribes and Awards Chairmen are the natural officers to write these award applications.
  • DGMs and AAs should work with their volunteer teams to determine for which awards they will submit applications in addition to the undergraduate applications.
  • Start writing now so you have plenty of time to get multiple applications prepared.
  • Have all your applications and supporting documentation complete and gathered before preparing to submit in KappaSig.net.
  • Add documents when prompted (ADD ALL DOCUMENTS BEFORE SAVING/SUBMITTING).
  • ONLY SAVE/SUBMIT once all your applications are uploaded.

Chapter awards that can be applied for include:

We are excited to announce the installation of the 430th Chapter of Kappa Sigma! Join us in welcoming the Upsilon-Upsilon Chapter at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.

The 104 new brothers were installed on Saturday, March 13, 2021. The installation was coordinated by Indiana/Illinois District Grand Master Ryan T. Bosse (Theta-Xi, Trine University, ’15) and Alumni Advisor Jonathan T. Anderson (Theta-Xi, Trine University, ’17). The Ritualist for the installation was Gabriel F. Rodriguez (Rho-Omicron, University of California, Merced, ’11) who also serves as ADGM for Indiana/Illinois District. Director of Recruitment and Expansion, Leo Brown, was in attendance.

The Upsilon-Upsilon brothers served more than 7,056 hours of service to both local and national communities. Their hard work and dediction sets a great example of the responsibilities of a Kappa Sigma.

A huge thank you to the following Chapters for their part in the installation: Alpha-Gamma ( University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Beta-Gamma (University of Missouri), Chi (Purdue University), Theta-Xi (Trine University), Sigma-Rho (Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville).

Stephen Alonzo Jackson was truly a Brother like no other. We honor Brother Jackson each March in a number of ways. Every March 4th we commemorate Stephen Alonzo Jackson Day. For the last six years, we have also honored Brother Jackson with our Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving. Join us March 5th-7th in celebrating Brother Jackson’s legacy by helping us raise $1 Million over the biennium for chapter scholarship funds!

One hundred and 29 years ago today, on March 4, 1892, Brother Stephen Alonzo Jackson entered the Chapter Celestial. Shortly thereafter, Brothers of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity carried him to his final resting place in the Sinking Springs Cemetery in Abingdon, Virginia. They mourned and wept at the loss of their Brother who had been known across two decades as Kappa Sigma’s most influential and trusted leader. What those Brothers did not know is that they were also saying farewell to the Brother whose life would inspire future generations of Brothers as Kappa Sigma’s Visionary across the next 13 decades.

Brother Jackson was initiated into the Zeta Chapter at the University of Virginia in the Fall Term of 1872 and would spend the next 20 years of his life totally devoted to building the Kappa Sigma Fraternity from a struggling Chapter at the University of Virginia to one of the strongest collegiate fraternities the world would come to know.

He served as Kappa Sigma’s first Worthy Grand Master in the 1876-1878 Biennium, and he would serve two additional terms as WGM in 1878-1879 and in 1885-1887. He also served one term as Worthy Grand Procurator from 1883-1885.

He was one of the authors of Kappa Sigma’s Constitution, By-Laws and Rules at the first Grand Conclave in Baltimore, Maryland in 1876, he wrote and perfected Kappa Sigma’s Ritual which was formally introduced at the third Grand Conclave in Abingdon in 1880, and was chiefly responsible for the addition of 25 chapters to the roll of Kappa Sigma Fraternity while serving as an early Fraternity leader and as a member of the Supreme Executive Committee.

At the 1878 Grand Conclave in Richmond, Virginia, Brother Jackson would introduce the concept of the development of the Ritual of the Fraternity to the Brothers in attendance at that historic gathering when he delivered his famous “Apples of Gold” Speech that would echo down 142 years and which would be passed as a “precious heirloom to ages yet unborn”. The spirit of the Fraternity was born with his famous charge:

“May we not rest contentedly until the Star and Crescent is the pride of every college and university in the land.”

Jackson’s vision remains with all of us today as a guidepost and critical path forward for the Good of the Order and stands as a testimony as to what one man can do. When he joined the Chapter Celestial he was 41 years of age and for 20 years of his life, he gave generously of his time to assure that Kappa Sigma’s future was secure and would flourish for years to come. He was inducted into Kappa Sigma’s Inaugural Class of the Kappa Sigma Hall of Honor in 2003. He remains our champion!

During Women’s History Month, the Brothers of Kappa Sigma Fraternity salute all women’s fraternities and sororities. The Brothers of Kappa Sigma have been blessed to interact with members of the NPC (National Panhellenic Conference) and NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council), who provide leadership, campus spirit, philanthropy, service, and development opportunities for college women on campuses throughout North America.

Two members of Kappa Sigma played significant roles with the establishment and development of two of our interfraternal partners.. The contributions of these Brothers have been a significant source of Pride to Kappa Sigma.

On April 5,1895, Dr. Charles Richardson (Omikron, Emory & Henry, 1883) worked with Jean Vicenheller, Jobelle Holcomb, Christina May Boles, and Alice Cary Simonds to help establish Chi Omega Fraternity. Dr. Richardson is one of the five founders of Chi Omega and greatly treasured that honor throughout his life. He also was the Founder of the historic “Fabulous Xi” Chapter of Kappa Sigma at the University of Arkansas on May 29, 1890 and served as Worthy Grand Procurator of Kappa Sigma from 1898-1906.

Brother J. Miller Leake (Eta, Randolph-Macon College, 1897) provided tremendous assistance to Sigma Sigma Sigma in its early years. Sigma Sigma Sigma was founded at State Female Normal School (now Longwood College) on April 20, 1898, and was known as one of the “Farmville Four” along with Kappa Delta (founded on October 23, 1897), Zeta Tau Alpha (October 15, 1898), and Alpha Sigma Alpha (November 15, 1901). The Founders were Margaret Lee Batten, Louise Marie Davis, Martha Trent Featherston, Isabella Merrick, Sallie Jackson Michie, Lelia Scott, Elizabeth Watkins, and Lucy Wright.

Brother Leake wrote Tri Sigma’s Initiation Ritual, revised the Constitution, and assisted in writing the lyrics to “Stately and Royal”. Brother Leake is the only man given the permission to wear the Indented Triangle badge of Sigma Sigma Sigma.

Congratulations to undergraduate and alumnae members of Women’s College fraternities and sororities, as they have made such an important and vital difference to our society, to North America, and to many countries spread throughout the world. We celebrate your friendship today!

On March 4th at 3:40 PM, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity will launch our annual STEPHEN ALONZO JACKSON WEEKEND OF GIVING! At the 72nd Biennial Grand Conclave in Charlottesville, Kappa Sigma established a historic biennium goal to raise $1,000,000 exclusively through SAJ Weekend of Giving. Last Year we raised over $545,000!

Brothers from across North America will join together to make history by raising over $500,000 during our 2021 campaign, of which 100% of funds raised will go directly to the donating brother’s home Chapter Scholarship Fund.

SAJ Weekend of Giving is held the weekend adjacent to Stephen Alonzo Jackson Day (March 4th), when we honor the life of one of our greatest brothers, who oversaw Kappa Sigma’s historic expansion and perfected our ritual.

This program and others have allowed the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund to provide over $6,000,000 in Kappa Sigma Scholarship-Leadership Awards (SLA) to our brothers. In fact, over 450 undergraduate brothers – a new record for number of awards and a 31% increase over last year – received an award in 2020.

We need your help… As leaders of your undergraduate chapters, you can be part of history by signing up today at SAJgiving.org to be an SAJ Weekend of Giving AMBASSADOR. This exclusive and special group of brothers will help us share the SAJ message via social media and other platforms.

Kappa Sigma has always answered the call when a great challenge is before us. Won’t you join us in our pursuit of history? Generations of Kappa Sigma brothers will benefit from your leadership.

Please direct any questions about Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend to KC Meyercord, Director of  Development & Chapter Operations (kendallm@hq.kappasigma.org) or visit SAJgiving.org.

While big stars like Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan planned to rock the stadium during Super Bowl LV, it was Brother Warren L. “Wawa” Snipe (Mu-Iota, Gallaudet University, ’94) that stole the pregame show and even trended across the internet! Brother Snipe performed the national anthem and “America the Beautiful” during the pregame of the Super Bowl on February 7th, and during his performance, he captured the attention of so many across the nation.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Brother Snipe said, “When you’ve worked so hard on your craft, giving everything you’ve got for your community and they ask you to do the Super Bowl, to me that’s an honor and some recognition of your hard work.”

Brother Snipe not only used his stage to showcase his hard work but also to help others see into the eyes of the deaf culture, especially within the music industry. Brother Snipe is a rapper and actor within the deaf community and has recently released an album titled, Deaf: So What! His integration of hip-hop into the national anthem brought to life the signs and made for an unforgettable performance.

Whether it was his contagious smile, energetic motions, or the hours of hard work and preparation he had, Brother Snipe outdid himself! Kappa Sigma is honored to call you a Brother. AEKDB!

We are excited to announce the re-installation of the 279th Chapter of Kappa Sigma! Join us in welcoming the Xi-Kappa Chapter at Florida International University in Miami, Florida.

The 32 new brothers were installed on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Worthy Grand Treasurer, Martin C. Petersen (Rho, Arizona State University, ’66), and Director of Recruitment and Expansion, Leo Brown, were in attendance. The installation was coordinated by District Grand Master Joshua E. Frost (Lambda-Epsilon, University of Central Florida, ’07) and Alumni Advisor Zachary R. Arcelona (Omicron-Eta, Nova Southeastern University, ’15). The Ritualist for the installation was Robert H. Tessmer, Jr. (Lambda-Epsilon, University of Central Florida, ’96)

The Xi-Kappa brothers served more than 1,700 hours of service to both local and national communities. Their relentless work serves as a great core model for the responsibilities of a Kappa Sigma and their duty to leadership, fellowship, scholarship and service.

A huge thank you to the following Chapters for their part in the installation: Rho- Zeta (Florida Gulf Coast), Upsilon-Iota (Boca Raton, FL), and Omicron-Eta (NOVA Southeastern University).

The installation had a number of health safety protocols to promote the wellness of members: initiations were staggered, masks were worn by all in attendance, social distancing was mandatory, and hand sanitizer was provided for use. This is a great success for our Order as it reminds us that COVID-19 will not stop or slow us down. We will continue working to achieve Jackson’s Dream and spread our Order across the nation! Congratulations to the newly installed Brothers of Xi-Kappa!
