Kappa Sigma Celebrates Native American Heritage Day https://www.kappasigma.org/kappa-sigma-recognizes-native-american-heritage-day-2022/ Fri, 25 Nov 2022 22:47:45 +0000 https://www.kappasigma.org/?p=16056 The post Kappa Sigma Celebrates Native American Heritage Day appeared first on Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity recognizes Native American Heritage Day today by celebrating the contributions of our Native American Brothers across North America. Brothers of Native American descent are exemplifying the Star and Crescent everyday in their lives, and a prime example is Brother Stephen M. Vest (Mu-Eta, University of Louisville,1983).

Brother Vest serves the Order as our District Grand Master for Greater Kentucky and is the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Kentucky Monthly. Brother Vest traces his ancestry to Powhatan at the dawn of the European expansion into North America and is similarly a descendant of Thomas Aerosmith, a member of the Crow Nation who settled in a part of western Virginia that became a part of Kentucky. Clearly, Brother Vest’s ties to the Commonwealth of Kentucky run deep!

Pledging to join the Mu-Eta Chapter at the University of Louisville in the early 80s, Brother Vest entered the 12th Gate in 1983 and is proud of “the way that we’ve embraced diversity and inclusiveness” over the course of the ensuing 40 years. Brother Vest remembers his time as a Kappa Sigma Pledge and was “the most exotic person [at the time]. When the guys from Beta-Nu (University of Kentucky) came down for the Pledging Ceremony, they asked my Pledge Brothers ‘who’s the foreign guy? My family has been in the U.S. and America for as long as I can tell. I thought it was funny. Today, I’d be considered typical [and] it shows how far the Fraternity has come. We are much more inclusive today than we were 30-35 years ago.”

Over his almost four decades as a Brother of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Brother Vest has learned a great deal. One such lesson is one he readily shared with other Brothers:  “There [are]  important lessons in the ritual. And if you actually understand and follow the lessons in the ritual, everything else takes care of itself. You don’t have problems with people paying their dues or acting in certain ways if they truly understand what they’re a part of. We’ve all agreed to live by a certain set of rules and I don’t think this is something that’s restrictive… It’s empowering if you pay attention to it. The other stuff is non-existent or should be.”

Thank you Brother Vest for your leadership, wisdom, and for your dedication to your Brothers! A.E.K.Δ.B.

The Alumni and Undergraduate Brothers have also shown their love and commitment to the Order through their gifts to the Endowment Fund of the Fraternity in providing support for scholarship and educational programs. Worthy Grand Master Adam Merillat also announced at the Grand Conclave that the Fraternity and Endowment Fund would implement a new initiative on the Founder’s Day weekend for the 5 Campaign. This Campaign focused on the challenge for Brothers who were One of Jackson’s Men to upgrade their Jackson’s Men commitment to the next level. The result was overwhelming and resulted in the most successful weekend campaign in the history of the Fraternity. 581 men stepped forward to meet the challenge to raise
$1,382,054 in commitments and gifts.

The success of the fundraising efforts continued on the weekend of March 4, 2022, with the 7th Annual Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving. Over the course of the three-day weekend, undergraduate and alumni ambassadors reached out across North America to Undergraduate and Alumni Brothers to raise funds for the Chapter Scholarship Funds for Kappa Sigma Chapters. The result was $726,115 raised from 14,576 Brothers. In the last two years combined for the Jackson Weekend of Giving, the Endowment Fund has benefitted from the generosity and love of the Order to raise $2,054,133. These funds will recognize the Undergraduate Brothers who excel in the classroom and who serve in leadership positions in the Chapter and on their respective campuses. These gifts also support future generations of the Kappa Sigma Brothers.

On Founder’s Day December 10, 2021, the Endowment Fund awarded 592 Scholarships to Brothers who distinguished themselves in scholarship and leadership for their Chapter. It was the largest number of Scholarships presented in a single year. This is a direct result of the growth in Chapter Scholarship Funds.

Probably the most impressive part of these efforts is that Alumni and Undergraduate Brothers alike are recognizing the value of their Kappa Sigma experience and the positive impact the Fraternity has made in their lives. The future is bright for Kappa Sigma with such commitment.

Brother Warren “WAWA” Snipe (Mu-Iota, Gallaudet University, ’94) will be making history on Sunday when he takes the stage at Super Bowl LVI.

For the first time in the history of the Super Bowl, the halftime show will feature two famous deaf rappers. Brother Snipe and fellow musician Sean Forbes will sign and perform  during the halftime show.

This is the second year that Brother Snipe will have a presence at the biggest football game of the year. Super Bowl LV featured Brother Snipe as the ASL interpreter for Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church’s national anthem and America the Beautiful performances.

“I would listen to the music over and over to get a feel of the music and the singing,” Snipe told The Washington Post last year. “This takes a lot of time and you want to make sure you’re understood, so playing with various ways to interpret a song is warranted!”

Super Bowl LVI and its halftime show will air on Super Bowl Sunday, February 13th. Brother Snipe is joined by other major artists, including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar.

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity extends our deepest congratulations to Brother Snipe as he shares his gifts with the world. Congratulations Brother! A.E.K.D.B.

Kappa Sigma has just completed the greatest fall rush in our 152-year history, topping the all-time average men pledged by chapter.

Amazingly, we have also already pledged in more men than all of last year and it’s only October 25. This number will continue to grow as some chapters are participating in mid-semester rush and the establishment of new colonies across North America!

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund have never been stronger or healthier in our storied history.

The credit goes to our dedicated undergraduates and volunteer alumni who have solidified our rightful place as the largest college men’s fraternity in the world. Congratulations and thank you brothers, you have made history. Number one, second to none.
