Kappa Sigma Fraternity raised more than $725,000 during its seventh annual Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving, held March 4th through 6th. Over the past 2 years, the Fraternity has raised more than $1.5 million for undergraduate scholarships through the 2021 and 2022 Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekends of Giving.

Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving was established in 2016 to raise funds for the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund’s Scholarship-Leadership Awards program. 100% of funds raised during SAJ Weekend of Giving go towards designated Chapter Scholarship Funds. Scholarship-Leadership Awards are given to qualifying Kappa Sigma undergraduate members each year on Kappa Sigma’s Founders Day, December 10.

In 2021, the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund awarded 592 undergraduate scholarships, the most in Kappa Sigma’s 152-year history.

“Kappa Sigmas from every corner of North America came together over Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving and demonstrated, yet again, why Kappa Sigma is a brotherhood like no other,” said Adam J. Merillat, President of Kappa Sigma’s International Board of Directors. “I’m continuously in awe of our Brothers’ generosity and commitment to serve our current and future undergraduate members.”

The undergraduate scholarship fundraising event is named after Stephen Alonzo Jackson, Kappa Sigma’s first international President, and an initiate of Kappa Sigma Fraternity’s  Zeta Chapter at the University of Virginia.

Kappa Sigma has begun the critical work of assembling our next AREA RECRUITMENT MANAGER (ARM) team for the 2022-2023 school year.

This special group of talented brothers will be tasked to ensure our rightful place as the most preferred fraternity in the world.

The Brothers we seek for this elite group must have a proven track record of fraternal accomplishment and an unwavering, evident love of the Order, along with unbridled enthusiasm and passion for Kappa Sigma.

As part of your application, we ask that you produce an introductory video (not to exceed three minutes) answering two very important questions…

– Why do I love Kappa Sigma?

– Why do I want to be an Area Recruitment Manager?

Twenty FINALISTS will be selected and invited to participate in live interviews at Kappa Sigma International Headquarters (Charlottesville, VA) in early Spring. The fraternity will pay all travel expenses.

Of the Finalists, Kappa Sigma will ultimately choose five to 10 dynamic brothers, who will be asked to serve a minimum one-year commitment to advance our fraternity. Competitive starting salary, bonus, and benefits.

In addition to the video, please include your resume and Kappa Sigma accomplishments.

Applications should be emailed to Leo Brown at Leo@hq.kappasigma.org.

You must be a difference-maker, and the most committed brothers should apply.

Kappa Sigma Fraternity today announced that college football coaches Lloyd H. Carr (Beta-Gamma, University of Missouri, ’65) and Fisher DeBerry (Alpha-Nu, Wofford College, ’57) have been named 2021 Kappa Sigma Men of the Year. Brothers Carr and DeBerry are both inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame and have combined for 289 wins over the course of their storied careers.

Lloyd H. Carr is an August 30, 1965 initiate of the Beta-Gamma Chapter at the University of Missouri. He is best known for his tenure as Head Football Coach at the University of Michigan from 1995-2007. Brother Carr was the National Coach of the Year in 1997 while leading the Wolverines to a National Championship. Overall, he led Michigan to five Big Ten championships and 13 Bowl appearances, retiring with the third-best conference winning percentage in Big Ten history. Brother Carr is a 2011 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame.

James Fisher DeBerry is a May 8, 1957 initiate of the Alpha-Nu Chapter at Wofford College. Along with early-career positions at his alma mater Wofford, as well as Appalachian State, Brother DeBerry is best known as the longtime Head Coach at the Air Force Academy from 1984 to 2006. He is the winningest coach in U.S. service academy history, and he led the Falcons to 14 Commander-in-Chief’s trophies with a 34-8 record over rivals Army and Navy. Brother DeBerry won the 1985 Paul “Bear” Bryant Award as the country’s top coach and is also a 2011 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Both Brothers Carr and DeBerry are noted for their charitable work off the field as well. In 2004, Brother DeBerry and his wife founded the Fisher DeBerry Foundation to provide opportunities for children of single-parent homes. Brother Carr is noted for his support of women’s athletics and the Special Olympics.

“The Kappa Sigma Man of the Year Award honors those who have reached the top of their professions. It is hard to find better examples of success and leadership than Brothers Carr and DeBerry. I am ecstatic that these two notable Kappa Sigmas will be our 2021 Kappa Sigma Men of the Year. Go Air Force! Go Blue!” said Worthy Grand Master Adam Merillat, an alumnus of the University of Michigan.

Brothers Carr and DeBerry will be honored at an event to be held in the spring of 2022 at Kappa Sigma International Headquarters in Charlottesville, Va.

The Kappa Sigma Man of the Year Award has been awarded annually since 1939. Each Brother honored as a Kappa Sigma Man of the Year has set an example which some may equal but none excel in his personal and professional life. The achievement of such success by Kappa Sigmas brings glory to the Order and demonstrates the enduring impact of the Kappa Sigma experience. Recipients of the Man of the Year award and their Chapters each receive a special plaque and are recognized at Kappa Sigma International Headquarters.

Kappa Sigma is the largest college social fraternity in the world with more than 200,000 living members, including approximately 16,000 undergraduates and 300 chapters and colonies located throughout the United States and Canada. Founded in 1869 at the University of Virginia, Kappa Sigma International Headquarters is based in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Kappa Sigma Breaks Record with $124,100 Military Heroes Month https://www.kappasigma.org/kappa-sigma-breaks-record-with-124100-military-heroes-month/ Thu, 02 Dec 2021 16:28:28 +0000 https://www.kappasigma.org/?p=15405 The post Kappa Sigma Breaks Record with $124,100 Military Heroes Month appeared first on Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

]]>

Kappa Sigma Fraternity has broken a new record by having its most successful Military Heroes Month ever, raising more than $124,100, almost twice as much as previous campaigns.

Military Heroes Month was established by Kappa Sigma to honor military veterans and active-duty service members in the United States and Canada, and the campaign coincides with observances of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day each November. Chapters of Kappa Sigma are encouraged to have events and raise both awareness and funds for the Kappa Sigma Military Heroes Campaign. This year’s events raised $124,100 for the Military Heroes Campaign between November 1st and Giving Tuesday on November 30th.

“As a veteran myself, I am extremely proud of what the Military Heroes Campaign does to support the brave men and women, and their families, who have chosen to serve us all through their devotion to duty and personal sacrifice. Kappa Sigma is honored to be able to work with our charitable partners to give back to those who have given so much,” said Worthy Grand Treasurer Martin C. Petersen (Rho, Arizona State University, ’66). Brother Petersen is a proud veteran who served in the US Army in Vietnam, and then joined the Central Intelligence Agency where he served for over 33 years before retiring as the Agency’s Deputy Executive Director and Acting Executive Director.

The Kappa Sigma Military Heroes Campaign was launched in 2007. Its mission then and now remains to give back to those who serve our country. The Military Heroes Campaign is primarily funded by Kappa Sigma undergraduate chapters and their alumni through their philanthropic fundraising efforts. The funds are aggregated through the national campaign so that significant donations can be made to charities verified to be 100% veteran-focused. As a result, 100% of funds generated by the Military Heroes Campaign go to support veterans. Last biennium, more than $500,000 was distributed to veterans charities through the Military Heroes Campaign.
